I often find gross slugs crawling into my beehives, but today I pulled about a dozen snails just like this out of one hive.
There’s nothing in the photo to provide scale, but the snail is about 3cm (~1inch) round. Most of the snails were inside the hive near the bottom board, but I found a few in the top box too. What the…?
The bees don’t seem to be bothered by them and I can’t detect any damage being done.
I wonder if beehive snails are just a Newfoundland thing. Probably.
I’ve seen slugs, earwigs and ants in the Uk, but don’t recall meeting hive snails.
